Claire and I are on vacation and we have a long to-do list of renos. Today’s task was to remove the two apple trees and a lilac bush.

The apple trees, planted by the previous owner, were too close to the house and to each other. They were very young trees, with poorly established root systems, so it took less than an hour to remove them.

Feeling buoyed by our sucess, we moved on to the lilac bush but five hours later, we had to put our tools away and admit defeat. We shoveled, hacked, forked and cut hundreds roots but the stubborn little @#%, still won’t budge.
